Best Breeds Of Cat For Indoors

Any cat is suited to the indoors life, especially if this happens from kittenhood. The most important aspect is ensuring you spend enough time with your cat, and that he is provided with plenty of entertainment, be it lots of play time with you, a companion or time spent outside on a leash.

Having said that, there are some breeds which do better indoors than others. More laid back/placid breeds are generally happy to spend their day snoozing and their nights curled up on your lap. Breeds which suit the indoor life include:

Persian/Exotic

Coat: Longhair (Persian), Shorthair (Exotic)

Both the Persian and Exotic are quite and affectionate. They get along well with children and other pets. They have a sweet, calm disposition.

Burmese

Coat: Shorthair

The Burmese is a sweet, friendly and personable cat. They are playful but not over the top active. They are extremely affectionate and get along well with children and other pets. The Burmese are my favourite breed of cat, I think they suit almost every household. They can get lonely if left for long periods of time.

Australian Mist

Coat: Shorthair

The Australian Mist is a lovely breed of cat. Friendly, outgoing and very human oriented.

British Shorthair

Coat: Shorthair

The British Shorthair is a calm, laid back and placid breed of cat. Somewhat more independent than other breeds, they are perfectly suited to a life indoors where they are happy to amuse themselves.

Ragdoll

Coat: Longhair

Ragdolls are placid, relaxed, loving and sweet natured cats. They are quite "dog-like" in personality and will follow you around the house. They get along with everyone, including pets and children.

Domestic (moggy)

Coat: Longhair or short hair

Domestics come in all shapes and sizes and many different personalities. Some are active, others quiet. Shelters are always looking for great new homes for domestics. Your shelter can match you up with a perfect domestic who will be happy to be indoors. Senior cats should not be overlooked either, they have outgrown the active kitten phase and are generally quieter.

Burmilla

Coat: Shorthair

The Burmilla came about due to an accidental mating between a Burmese and a Chinchilla but is now a breed within its own right. They have the best of both breeds being calm, friendly, sweet natured and laid back. They get along well with children and other pets.

Russian Blue

Coat: Shorthair

Russian Blues are a quiet but inquisitive breed of cat. They love to follow you around and help with whatever you are doing. They are playful, but not overly active and suit the indoor lifestyle perfectly.

Russian blue cat
Scottish Fold

Coat: Shorthair

The Scottish fold is an affectionate, sweet, intelligent cat who gets along well with everyone.

Singapura

Coat: Shorthair

The Singapura is a playful, friendly, easygoing breed of cat who can win the hearts of cat lovers and non-cat lovers. They are gentle and sweet. They love nothing more than to be near you. I find them to be a quiet submissive breed of cat who get along well with other pets but won't dominate the household.
