Overview:
As the name would suggest,
hypo (below/lower/deficient) + glyc
(glucose) + emia (relating to blood)
is an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood. This results in the
body not having enough energy to meet it's needs.
What causes
hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia is commonly associated
with diabetes, but there are many possible causes of hypoglycemia in
cats. Some of which include;
What are the
symptoms of hypoglycemia?
- Weakness
- Lethargy
- Disorientation
- Shakiness/tremors/shivering
- Dizziness
- Incoordination (drunken gait)
- Drowsiness
- Convulsions
- Coma
How is it treated?
If your cat is still conscious & can
swallow, give it a sugar solution such as corn syrup, maple syrup or
honey. If it is not able to swallow, rub this solution onto the mucous
membranes of the cat's cheeks. Never force fluids or food into the mouth
& be very careful to avoid getting bitten.
It is important to follow up with your
veterinarian, even if your cat appears to be fine. If diabetic, his
insulin levels may need to be re-adjusted. If not diabetic, further
tests will need to be performed to determine & treat the cause.
