Does anyone know how prevalent heartworm is in cats? It's only recently that I've learnt that cats can get it. I thought it was only in dogs in Australia.

I try to avoid giving pesticides to my cats as much as possible, eg only treat them for fleas if they actually have fleas, but heartworm is a much more serious risk.

You can view the reported cases of diseases in dogs and cats at http://www.diseasewa....org/index.php/ (you will need to create a log in). This is a site run by Virbac that relies on veterinary clinics to log on and record any cases of those diseases.  So of course it's only as accurate as the number of clinics that use it, and doesn't include those undiagnosed heartworm, but it is useful for a general idea.  The 10 reported heartworm cases in the last 12months have been in South Australia and northern Australia from Newcastle upwards.

Thanks Kit and Kat. Is heartworm something many people worry about?
