Hi Everyone

I am planning to cat-proof our backyard fence and so have been having a look at some of the pictures on this forum - very helpful, thank you. However, I just have one query. I came across this design on a netting website - my question is whether you think that this design would keep the moggies in, or do you think that the netting really needs to be on an angle? My problem is that I have told the neighbours that the netting will be unobtrustive, and so I ideally don't want it to protrude above the fence. Would appreciate any feedback.

Sorry, I've accidentally posted this topic twice (I didn't think the first one had worked).

There is no way that would keep either of my cats in, it has to be angled, and Harley can jump over 8 feet so it has to be up fairly high. Mine is not angled but mine is over 8 feet from the ground, and you have to be careful with things that cats can use as launching pads to jump from as well. Can you grow some creepers on it to hide it so it isn't an eyesore for your neighbors? Something like passionfruit is very fast growing, but if they are more patient you can plant star jasmine like we have. The potato flower creeper is also quite fast growing, there are pleny of plants to choose from.

Hopefully if your neighbors realise you are trying to keep your cats from going into their garden they may be prepared to put up with it. If you use square wire mesh about 1cm squares it should look neat and tidy.

That would only work if the cats are not upwardly mobile....I think it has to come out on an angle as well.....have a look at this site - these brackets should not offend your neighbour....

Thanks for your comments. You have confirmed my suspicions. I've decided that I am going to put some fence extensions onto the fence (we have some, but not all the way around, and I know the neighbours won't mind this, and then I'll put the higher angled netting. That way, everyone should be happy.

BTW, Heather, you probably don't remember me, but two of my moggies are from you - Felix (our bluepoint) and Oscar (sealpoint). You might remember Oscar in particular - he was a boy that was going to be bred from but had a kink in the end of his tail so he had to be sold as a pet (his picture is in my signature, although he's now nearly 4 years old). Here's a couple of more updated picturs of them both ...

How could I forget them....your blue boy was the one that I think had been sold as a pet to a horrid child and I refunded the deposit because he had thrown him away... and you came along the next day if my memory serves me correctly.....

AND the seal boy was the one that someone who was visiting to see cats ignored my instructions to leave gates alone and jammed his tail in the gate. They both look really handsome....it is lovely to see updated pictures of them.

If you know anyone who admires your seal boy and would like one like him as a pet - the brother that stayed has been desexed some months ago and is looking for a home. A lover of a boy - probably best suited to living with another girl or on his own.

If you know anyone who might be interested just get in touch.

Yes, you're completely correct about the blue boy ... great memory!

Now the seal boy! It's funny you should mention his brother needing a home, because our seal boy is pushing his luck severely with me lately, to the point where I've considered that he may need one as well! Seriously though, what a problem he has been lately. He's been urinating all over the house (I even purchased a black-light torch and found about 15 places where he's been). He's also been giving our older girl a terribly hard time - she is terrified of him because he attacks her every chance he gets. I've taken him to the vet and there's no physical reason for his behaviour, so I'm at my wits end with him.

As you can see, I'm in the process of getting the backyard secured ... I think he's going to be spending a lot more time out there!

Regards
Chris

This wouldn't keep my cats in either, have you considered an actual enclosure?

I'm going to get a quote on an enclosure as well, just so I can weigh up the options. Will then make a decision.

Oh dear I am sorry that the seal boy is causing so much agro - there must be something or another neighbourhood cat causing some distress that he should have decided all of a sudden to become such a pain......perhaps a small enclosure for him at night and acccess to the garden in the daytime might resolve it.

I assume you are Biozetting everything in sight - has your vet suggested Feliway diffusers, Rescue Remedy in the water and perhaps even putting him on Clomicalm - not that this is a great option long term.

Robbie - his brother on the other hand is a lovely boy and so far has shown himself to be clean and would love to be a pet.

Have tried the Feliway, but might give the other two suggestions a go. I have to go down to the vet tomorrow, so might have another talk to him about it.

You'd better watch out because I might sneak in and do a swap when you're not looking, seeing his brother is much better behaved! happydance.gif
