Firstly, hi everyone. I have lurked on here for a few months, ever since I brought my beautiful baby girl, Bella, home. The advice and expertise is always helpful, and I am hoping some of you can help me.

Bella is a beautiful, blue British Shorthair, almost 5 months old. She has always (beginning at the breeders house the day I picked her up) had occasionally a small part of her bowel protruding from her anus. It isn't after every poo, and after a couple of weeks of her living here it had decreased to only once or twice a fortnight. I talked to the vet about it (both visits!) when I had her there for her vaccinations, they said it was probably due to a food sensitivity, and since it wasn't bothering her at all, just keep an eye on it.

About 10 days ago, late on a Saturday night, she had blood oozing out of her bottom after doing poos. I panicked, but she was fine in every other way and continued her play session; the next day, she went to the toilet with no problems whatsoever, so I put it down to a once off. However, it happened again last night, so off to the vets we went today.

The good news is, the vet did a thorough examination (Bella was most displeased at having a the vet do a physical rectal exam!) and said physically, everything is fine. She was a little impacted, so the vet thinks she may be straining and bursting a blood vessel - hence the blood (it is always bright red, not dark). They suggested I try a prescription diet for a month or so, to see if that makes any difference. They gave me Royan Canin SO, both wet and dry. I was nervous that Bella would turn her nose up at it, but she seemed to like it well enough tonight.

Does anyone else use this food, and has it helped at all? It is a bit more expensive than the food I usually buy for her, but I can afford to continue with it if it makes a difference. Is there any other sensitive type diets/brands that you know of that might help?

The good news is, Bella is fine in every other respect - she is bright, alert, playful and happy; and eating and drinking as normal. In fact, I am more worried about it than she is!

Many thanks for your time and advice.

just to clarify is this IBS or altered bowel habits causing straining and PR bleeding? the treatment and diet I would assume as is in humans be very different for both these conditions, I would be taking the advise of my vet on either account as far as diet and treatment.

In the U.S. Royal Canin SO is a Urinary Tract food formula. I fed my guys Royal Canin IVD because one of them has a protein allergy. It's a bit pricey but they were OK with it. Royal Canin make top shelf food.

Cassie was having constipation problems, now finally I have it under control. I thought it might have been megacolon, but the vet said no. I still do not know what the difference is between megacolon and what she is. I don't know if she has irritable bowel or what. she is on lactulose. and on hills r/d dry and canned food, for the higher fiber.

One of my girls Misty has bowel/allergy/sensitivity issues (vomiting, diarrhoea, mucuous/blood, weight loss) and after converting her to Hills Science Z/D she has pretty much been symptom free (stress can exacerbate her problem and simple things like her mum or dad going away overnight can stress her). My vet orders 4.5kg bags for me which is very good value for money. It took her a couple days to like it, but now she thinks its kitty drugs!
