I my name is Debbie and i haven't had cats in my life for twenty years. After the loss of my beloved Mother Puss i met and lived with my now husband , who had never had a cat and "hated" them! When we got together I still had my little cross Silky "Tequila" (he wasn't fussed with her either as she was a "talking dog" and drove him nuts with the noise!) but she was a tenacious little bugger and gradually over the years
grew" on him! At the time we lived in the "Burbs" and Tequila became very stressed and started losing her hair. We packed up and "headed for the hills" and within three weeks all her hair had grown back and she looked lovely. Then new neighbours moved in next door complete with kids (no problem) and dog (problem) up here there are no property fences etc and the day they moved in Tequila and I were walking around our house (sticky beaking) when this gorgeous little dog bolted straight over from next door Tequila didn't like her at all I felt this "connection" and guilt. So "Skippy" decided she wanted to be a part of our family as well, but by this stage Chris had bonded with Tequila and said "It's not on. Tequila is our dog and we need to protect her space." which we duly did until we lost Tequila suddenly at exactly 12 yrs and 10 mths old. We have her ashes and as we were all crying and blubbering my husband said "and don't think that Skippy is coming inside! " Well Skip was at the door the next morning ( as always) and i .... let her in. She was my best friend in the world for the next 10 years. Our neighbours aren't the best pet owners in the world so I made an agreement with them to "share" her. She stayed with me all week and went home weekends. I organised all her vet things and we'd go halves.
We had to let her go at age approx 17 on 8th April 2008. She was my "teacher".
My husband is 6'1" and 105 kgs but on the day she fell asleep peacefully in her bed beside ours he was a MESS
Enter Cats! Skip was determined that no dog would replace her... and she was right! She keeps sending us cats! Mr Darcy was our first arrival on the 8th June 2008 a feral kitten found in the barn of my daughter's boyfriend and bought home "just for the night" Well! what a hullabaloo! My husband went Ballistic and ordered me to "get rid of it" I cried all weekend as i tried to work something out. As a last resort i said to him "i'll take her to the vet and see if Louise can find her a home (he was so pretty i really thought he was a she) When i arrived at the vet on the Tues morning with the little one in a bunny rug Louise said "what have you got there?' I just broke down blubbering Chris hates cats and i don't know what to do! Louise said she'd find him a good home and away i went crying my eyes out but also trusting that Louise would. After about a week my husband said " i wonder if they found him a home he was a cute little kitten. He said why don't you drop in and just see? Well i did and he was still there waiting for us so i bit the bullet, put up with my husband sulking for 12 hours and laying down the law about the cat not being allowed on the bed, lounge benches etc, i assured him (ha ha) that you can train them not to do this. Mr Darcy has eyes only for my husband. We are under the threat of death should anything happen to Mr Darcy. Louise cannot get over the change in him.
We also have Miss Elizabeth another little feral that i fed three times a day until she was big enough to trap. Mr Darcy is the boss but Lizzie can hold her own! We also have Miss Elizabeth's mum at our office it's been 18 mths now and she is just starting to let us pat her and come a little way into the office (I trapped her and desexed her when i discovered her kittens)
Oh and by the way the cats sleep on the bed, sit up on the kitchen window sill and watch while we wash up etc, sit up on the vanity in the bathroom all with my husbands blessing!!!! He is the standing joke at the vet... oh yeh big toughy they say and laugh out loud. He's a big softie and loves them all like crazy!!
Sorry if it's a bit long winded but it's a bit of an over view and because I'm going through a new learning curve with "Special Needs Cats" I thought this would be a place to share and learn with like-minded people
