Hi all,

I have two cats, one is 7 years old desexed female, and the other is 5 year old desexed female. Anjushri is the mother of Asrai. Just lately they have been doing kneading behaviour on occasions which is unusual. I don't know whether it's due to feeling insecure or if they are needing more comfort or if they are feeling secure. They have been kneading blankets. It doesn't happen often, but it's unusual it's happening at all. They look very blissed out though.

Thanks in advance

I've only ever known kneading to happen with happy relaxed cats. I think there's even some kneading cats in the Photo Forum.

It sounds like you have two happy felines!

I agree relaxed and comforted kitties our Tzar does this on his fav blanket and lets out a little cry and purr so its normal. If it were a kitten then I would say it has been taken from mum too early but its nice for them they are happy!

Sit back and just think of something that makes you happy and your will smile I reckon its their way of telling us they are happy and loving life

Cherie

I have wondered about this as our little almost 1 year old girl does it to me (kneading my lap or chest if we are in bed) but not to my DH.

Thanks all,
That's good to know. They have experienced a big loss in the last few months, so I was concerned it may have been due to feeling insecure.

Heidi, that is a good way of describing it!

Mine do that all the time, and I have eight.

I call it "making biscuits". It's a relaxed, feel good thing. Cats that are given sedatives before surgery will knead, and being at the vets is not a place where most cats are happy and relaxed. But the drugs make them feel good and they knead.

It is a behaviour that reminds them of the good times when they were babies and feeling very warm and relaxed at the milk bar, doing their kneading to get more milk. They usually knead when they feel happy and in a familiar environment.

I think it's a happiness thing because Rufus will be lying there, you stroke him and his feet do the 'happy feet' thing even if it's not against something. He really gets into it against me (hmmm) and his blankie.

Claudius is also one that loves doing it, he'll look totally blissed out.

I love it when they knead. Ruby will knead my mouth and cheeks at night in bed!
