hey i have ordered a harness for Nala in hope i can train her to walk on a leash. but shes 2 and since we have had her shes only been as far as the balconies edge...

my question is if i take her outside will she still like being inside...

my step dad told me he did that with his cat let it out once and could never keep it inside again. the cat would alway meow and cry until he let her out after a few weeks of her behaviour he gave up and let her out! he said the moment you let a cat experiance the life she could have she wont want to stay inside.

i live in a unit and i cant let her out here, there is to many cars and a school next door but i would like to take her to the park or somewhere more quite where she can wonder around and explore.

WHAT DO I DO? try it and hope she normal after, or not try it at all because i cant let her outside its not an option.

I walk Keesha on a harness and a leash, she knows it is the only time she is allowed out and she will stick away unless we have her harness and her leash. She adjusted to it really well.

Ours were both apprehensive of the harness to begin with, especially when puting it on in the house but once they learnt of what the harness was all about they soon became to love it,
Now when we get the harnesses out Nikita jumps onto the chair where she normally dons it and Tobes goes to the screen door knowing where he is going once its on, yes.gif ,
I was also initially worried that too much outside would make them not want to be inside but they seem happy all round,

Cheers,Paul

They dont need to go far, mine love our garden,it will take them years to fully explore that but then Ragdlls are not quick movers, they get outside explore for a bit, then flop on the grass wub.gif

Well, Its up to you,I do have a bit of rebel in me about the rules of modern day life so if a sign only just says no dogs, then cats are certainly allowed in my mind and i would take mine, take a picture of the sign just in case and make the imbecile councils take you to court before paying any fine in case it ever came to that,
I got a fine once for letting my son fly a radio control plane in a school oval where the sign just said "no golf or dogs allowed", i didnt pay the fine on principle, and funnily enough they couldnt find a room for me in jail,
The sign at the school oval reads different now blink.gif

Cheers,Paul

I took my cat out for a walk and I believe that was the beginning of his howling problem mad18.gif . We have spent a fair amount of money on toys now, as the only way to stop him howling is by playing with him which I love doing it just gets a bit annoying when i'm trying to cook dinner!

We take him every evening just walking around the streets, which includes a park. My boyfriend put him in a tree once and now he loves to run and leap on trees and tries to climb them, and telegraph poles! So be warned there will be sudden bursts of running, so have a firm hold on the leash and put your running shoes on laugh.gif

As for dogs, Zanzi hasn't been too bad, he mostly freezes and lies down, as if they won't be able to see a white cat against a dark pavement huh.gif . We pick him up when a dog comes too close, mostly because the dogs have no boundaries. But you have to a have a very firm grip, the first time Zanzi tried to climb over my boyfriends head and clawed his face icon_lol.gif . But the main problem is he will chase after them, even dobermans... He also loves meeting other cats, and also chases them ... He has a girlfriend now, he likes sniffing her tail

George is exceptional on a leash, but the park is a bit overwhelming for him so I stick to the yard now. He doesn't have any problems being an indoor cat who gets to go for walks outside.

Yay the cats been pretty cool on a leash the first few times she just craws everywhere think shes not used to the harness but i took her to my mum massive back yard and she was soo happy exploring and adventuring around that when i got her home she didnt wake up until dinner time! and then fell asleep next to me whislt watching tv

i have had one dog incounter and she didnt seem to fussed but the dog was 10m away! shes really scared of cars and because i live in a street with just townhouses there always cars so she doesnt really like leaving the drive way!

im really happy i got her the leash now its great bonding time for us!

thank you all for your advise and Zanzi sound like the coolest cat on the block!!!

a get a few pretty funny looks mostly when my boyfriends holding the leash because he is a bodybuidler with a cat sorta looks odd i guese but his a big baby too!

I made the mistake a few days ago of taking my raggy out for a quick walk on the front lawn in the sun and fresh air, and well, he sat at the door for the rest of the day crying loudly and carrying on, jumping up at the door, trying to get my attention. He also made a dash for it when I was bringing in the washing later on. Ive since kept the doors shut so he cant see out, and hes calmed down and doesnt try to run out the door!
The other 2 are terrified of the great outdoors, ive had a few nasty scratches from just trying to carry them out there! Gonna try what you are doing and see how he goes on a harness.

Many people have written to CW because they started to take their cat outside and it created an obsession with crying to go out.....it is the common reaction but some are fine.

I think what you did is ok - put her in a carry box and take her to your mum's place now and then for a leash walk.....and I personally would never take a cat out in the open where a dog might emerge that would attack a cat - what would you do if one attacked her? she would go mental and the dog could well kill her.

One of the Birman breeders who posts here had their little cat killed sitting peacefully in the front garden while they were gardening - a neighbours dog killed it before anyone could act.

Mum's place once in a while sounds a good compromise to me unless you have your own fenced garden. Perhaps I am over-reacting but even walking a dog poses risk of attach from another dog and I notice people walking with a switch in hand around here to ward off straying dogs.

We've never really had a problem with dogs. im actually more worried about Zanzi attacking and hurting them! i saw a youtube video of a cat chasing a bear! It was very funny. I think if you are alert and they are always on the leash you can pick them up in time.

well the dog thing is my main worry! i agree with heather! and to make matter worse i am probably more scared of dogs than the cat! if i had to pick the cat up she will dig her claws into me to and i have a really low pain threshold. and if the dog was not on a leash and scary and big i probably run for my life myself!

i took her to mums last monday! on the way home in the cat box she started panting like a dog and got really sweaty paws pads? but at mums she loved every minute she didn't run once outside she just wondered around in there massive garden and before we left she sat 30min with us in the shade so it wasn't that she was exhusted! is it still a good idea taking her to mums? if the car trip there is going to be like this again?
