i recently moved and brought my 7 year old girl to the vet because of a respitory infection. the vet was of east indian decent and there was a communication problem. anyway he ended up giving my girl all her shots again when she had just gotten them 2 months beforehand. i thought he was giving her antibotics. she was given a 1 year rabies, leukemia and her regular 5 n 1 (?) again. what might be the outcome of this mistake to her health?? anyone had this experience??

I would be seeking the opinion of a vet with whom you an communicate, is their another vet in the practise with whom you can speak?

I have never had that experience but did have a not good experience when a kitten was over vaccinated.....If you can get some Homoeopathic Thuja 30 potency give your cat 5 days dose of this - it is energy remedy only and may just help with possible side effects - it boosts the immune system.

I would speak to a vet as well....we don't do Rabies over here in Australia and most of us only use F3. Your cat has been given a major challenge to the immune system. It might pay if you look up the modern US protocol for vaccinations - your cat is of an age where yearly vaccines are not necessary......3 yearly are recommended now and for older cats nothing - unless you have to use a boarding cattery.

I am sorry there was this mix up and I would be taking that veterinary surgery to task.....surely the vaccinations were recorded on the cat's record card and really they should have asked to see it as a new client.

Gosh! What an awful thing to experience! I would definitely seek a second opinion, hope kitty is okay!

She'll be fine. The worst that can happen is she be lethargic for a couple of days. It happens more frequently than people realize, especially when moving to a new vet. The person that checked you in should have made clear on her medical chart when her last vaccines were done. Then the tech should have been aware that vaccines weren't needed. Usually, the tech draws up the vaccines and have them in the room for the vet. So it wasn't just the vet that made a mistake, his whole staff did. What surprises me more, is that he gave her vaccines when she was sick. A good vet would wait until the respiratory infection was cleared up and then give vaccines. Find a vet that will discuss vaccine protocol with you. Some vets do annual vaccines and won't discuss other options. I have my cats on a 3 year protocol, 1 year they get a 3 year rabies vaccine, the 2nd year they get a FeLV, and the 3rd year they get a FVRCP. Then it starts over, so they only get 1 vaccine a year. If I didn't let my cats go outside at all, never outside, I'd skip the FeLV vaccine. (I would only skip the FeLV on an adult, that had been properly vaccinated as a kitten, with a least 1 adult booster.). I also prefer Merial Vaccines to Fort Dodge vaccines. Merial has taken the lead in reformulating their vaccines to reduce the risk of VAS (vaccine acquired sarcomas).

Thanks sooooooooo much for the very useful information. I did end up getting another vet. The prior vet was presented with the proper paperwork about Lovebug's health and vaccine history, so there really was no excuse as far as I am concerned.
