One of my cats loves spending time in the storm water drains. Last week (6/10/09 it is now 13/10/09) while my male cat was out it suddenly hailed and rained heavily and he has been missing since. Has anyone heard about cats drowning in these circumstances by the sudden downpour? I have checked the creek where I believe it empties to but his body is not there (and there is a grate which would have stopped him from going any further). He is microchipped but unfortunately his collar is sitting at the back door. Any ideas on what might have happened?

Very sorry you have lost him - but no idea what might have happened....it is possible for children to get caught in drains so I guess a cat could have done.
I am assuming you have notified the Council Ranger - sadly they have to retrieve bodies if any any found but they would scan for a micro-chip - at least out locals would.
On the hopeful side he may have just got very very fearful of the storm and be holed up somewhere and been locked in some-ones shed. Get neighbours to check their out buildings. I think whatever has happened to him will remain a mystery if he does not turn up ((hugs)) that is the worst thing - not knowing what has happened.

Have you tried looking for him by putting up posters, or going around in the evening or at night calling him? They are more prone to answer at night. Notify local vets and rescue centres that he is missing, or if there is a school nearby ask if you can put up a poster offering a reward for him, sometimes that helps for people to go looking. He could be injured and holed up somewhere, so I would go around locally and ask neighbors if you can check their sheds etc. Good luck, let us know how you are going. Most of all, don't give up, some cats have returned after weeks and months.
