Tobes, our boy doesnt really headbutt yet,he does flop at your feet or in our laps,
Head butts accompanied by the grumbling purrs and rubbing of the sides of there mouths against your face are special,
Cheers,Paul

Cats do have some strange methods of displaying affection! Some lick, some headbump, some chew fingers.... some do all of the above and then some!
If your cat headbumps you with his tail sticking straight up in the air like a flagpole, that's apparently a family greeting. I've read several articles that say the upright tail is a greeting, and when combined with a headbutt the cat is greeting you as a close family member.

Ed chews my fingers when I've not been paying enough attention to him, read: at 5am, when I get home from work, when I've been on the puter long enough.... I think he just likes chewing fingers!

My beautiful 1 year old babies I now have do it sometimes, though not regularly. I will continue to do it to them sometimes gently and see if it becomes a nice affectionate expression for them too. In the meantime, other gestures they give already are licking. I love when they lick my hand or leg or foot. lol. This may be more groom-related than affection-related, but that's ok. Sometimes when my face is near Monty's he rubs his cheek on mine. I love that. So cute. lol I also love when you reach down to pat them on the head, and they lift their head slightly into the pat, and their eyes close in bliss. So adorable.
