Hi all,
We are just about fed up with our little boy peeing on our couch, so hopefully someone is able to offer some advice.

Here are the details. We have two Bengals, a girl who just turned 1 and a little boy who is about 9-10 months old. They are both indoor cats and haven't been outside (only carried out a couple of times). And both have been desexed when we got them.

Up one end of the house is our lounge/dining area which has a leather couch and a futon couch, with a litter box next to their climbing tree. The other litter box is in the hall at the other end of the house near the bathroom. Their litter is cleaned out all the time after they make their business and it's replaced every week, still fairly clean.

The girl has no problems doing both number 1 & 2 in the litter; she is a 'good' girl.

Now we have had a fair bit of trouble with the 'naughty' little boy. At the start he would go #1 on the carpet and lino and a few times on the leather/futon couch. We finally got him to stop going on the carpet, lino and futon but not the leather couch. Basically he would go on the leather couch during the night while we are asleep. We always clean up by trying to soak up completely and wash with warm water. After this we have tried many things including, odour neutralising sprays, wiping with vinegar, lemon juice, lemon pieces (he just moved these and then went), feeding on top of couch. In the end we just covered the couch with a tarp; he went on this a few times.

He has been pretty good the last couple of weeks. Hasn't gone on the leather couch with the tarp on it, or anywhere else. He always does his #2 in the litter (tries to bury rolleyes.gif ) as well as his #1's.

But this morning I woke up, checked the futon, and found a nice big wet patch on it!!! ranting.gif

A bit of extra info, there hasn't been any changes around the house, nothing wrong with his appetite (eats lots), I am fairly sure that there is a cat that hangs around our area (prints on car) and they may have been able to see it through the door/window.

Does anyone know how to stop him going on the couches? Because we would like to take the tarp off the leather couch and the futon is nearly at the stage of getting thrown out due to stinking like pee.

I have searched the forum and tried things others have said, and searched the internet but still to no avail. The only thing I can think of is putting a peg on the end of it 1.gif or possibly locking him in the bathroom overnight with his litter but then we will hear him cry/winge all night.

Please if anyone can help it would be very much appreciated!!!! w00t.gif

Cheers

P.S. sorry for the very long post

Hi

You do have a bit of a problem. I suggest that you wash the leather with a mix of warm water and Biozet. You could wash the futon and carpet where he is soiling as well, just spot clean it. Biozet is a powder laundry detergent that you can buy from Safeway or Coles. There is another spray product that has just come onto the market by the makers of Wonderwheat (which is a brand of litter), it may be worth a go.

It sounds like now it is becoming a habit, the cat that he can see is probably the trigger. I notice that you only have two litter boxes, maybe you should consider getting a third as it really is ideal to have one more litter tray than the number of cats that you have. Also, where are the litter boxes actually as cats don't like to toilet in full view of everyone, they do like privacy, maybe consider getting a covered box, he may like that. You say that you clean the soiled part of the tray every time they go and change the tray in total once a week, maybe change it in total twice a week and reduce the amount that you put back in when you clean.

Also maybe take him to the vet and get his water works checked out to be on the safe side, males can be prone to urinary tract infections and that would eliminate that from the equation.

About locking him away at night if that will solve the problem of the peeing if he only does it whilst you are asleep, than that would be doable, he will yell a lot and let the world know that you are being cruel, but he will figure it out after a few nights that this is where he is going to be put for the night, with his litter tray toys and a bowl of water and maybe a radio on low for noise.

I use a spray called P**s Off to remove the smell of urine. My boy George has gone on my parents' leather couch a few times, and I gave the spray to mum and it worked brilliantly. I know there is also a product called Urine Off, and I think it's identical except for the name. It works best on dry surfaces, but what I suggested my mum do was spray it while it was still wet, then leave it to dry and spray it again. It completely got rid of the smell, and the couch was already a bit pee-smelling because of the family cat having some accidents on it in the past.
I have used Biozet to try to get rid of urine smells but it didn't work for me.

You can buy it online, at vets and in pet shops.

Thanks for the help carmel and peekablue.

Carmel, i will try the biozet, but i think the pee has soaked into the couch already thumbdown.gif . As for the litter boxes, they are the covered kind, but i might look at getting another just to see if that helps. The problem is, that he doesnt do it all the time. It used to be regular on the leather couch, until it got covered. But he has been good the last week or two, until last night.....

Peekablue, we have used the odour neutralizer stuff from woolworths, but i think we might buy some of the aid Buddha spread enlightenment or urine off.

You could also try camphor balls. They come in a little plastic cylinder and can be found in the same area of the supermarket as the fly spray They hate the smell of these. Just put three or four cylinders on the couch. It should work. You could also try citronella oil. Soak some papertowels and place those on the tarp or sit them on little plates on the couch until he gets the message.
Good luck it is so frustrating. Maybe go back to step one and try retraining him to use his trays. Put him in the laundry and only let him have free range when you can supervise him.

The supermarket stuff doesn't hold a candle to the P**s Off, and it's specially made just for urine. I was quite surprised it got the smell out of leather, but it certainly did.

I had this problem with my rescue girl. She would pee on the couch, carpet and occasionally on our bed. I have two cats and the problem has been escalating for a year. I had her vet checked first...no problems there. I got Urine Erase which was the only thing I could find that worked to get the smell out. And I added a third litter box to the house. There should be one litter box for each cat + one extra. It has been six weeks since we got the third litter box, and six weeks since she peed outside of the box. Before that, it was several times a week, if not every day. There is hope! Good luck.

I have been lookin for a deterent that would keep my cats off our old lounge - which has been peed on numerous times!
So I went and got the camphor balls in the little cylinders from the shops last week - worth a try.

And guess what?

The cats have been playing with them on the floor!! LOL
I guess I'll have to find something else......
