Hi All,

I have a two year old Bombay named Max. About a year ago, before we could get the official asthma diagnosis, he went into respiratory distress and spent 1 1/2 days in the ER. After that he's been on meds - 1 puff of albuterol and 1 puff of provent (110) twice a day. For the last 5 months the symptoms have been very controlled with an occassional cough every other day or so. However, over the last few weeks, the coughs have returned 3-5 times a day. I'm a little frustrated that he's still coughing while on the meds. I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone had similar experiences with Feline asthma and can offer some suggestions? Thanks, Val

I can't comment on feline asthma, but as a sufferer of asthma, I can relate.

I hope the vet can help him with his coughing sad.gif

Is there a cat version of seretide on the market? I found this made things so much easier for me.

Hi

Can't offer any help, but have some questions for you.

I have a cat who we believe may have asthma. She has been taking tablets for a few weeks now, is coughing somewhat less, but is still coughing. She is going in for a chest xray tomorrow to make sure it isn't anything more sinister.

How long did it take before your cat's asthma was officially diagnosed? Was it a process of ruling all other possibilities out or did he just start responding to the medication?

Good luck with your boy!

He had a chest xray which showed that he had something like "allergic airways". If it is asthma I would definitely get the Aerokat and start the inhalers ASAP per the vets instructions.

My dear FE died from asthma - his heart gave out. He was on Cortisone tabs but on a "needs" basis - obviously not the best medication.

Good luck with your boy.

Did his heart give out because of the effect of the meds or because the meds didn't work? I hadn't heard of asthma causing the heart to give out.

My Linxy has had asthma since he was 9mos. he is now 6. I find sometimes he needs more meds. So I double up on his hits instead of the regular morning and evening puffs I do it twice at each treatment. You might also hold it on him longer so he breathes in more. How long do you keep the inhaler on him? have you checked out Fritz the Brave? Fantastic help for feline asthma. Sending hugs, pets and purrs.

My Simbah has mild asthma as well. He is on a low dose Cortisone for something else but the specialist vet said that cortisone would have been his treatment of choice anyway. I think if Simbah didnt have to take Cortisone for his mouth problem already then I would look at other alternatives like an inhaler as well since long term cortisone use isnt good for their little kidneys but if it means giving them quality of life and relief from a life threatening disease like asthma can be then I suppose it has to be done sad.gif
