Hello there,
I think my kitten had a stroke last night. Do cats have strokes. She was a very undernourished kitten and near death when we got her. She is now 12 months old and the size of a six month old. Last night she was fine, then she jumped off the couch and started staggering sideways. She walked into furniture etc. She then fell to the floor and started convulsion type movements. She went very stiff and shook for a while, then went to sleep. She appears fine this morning. The vet does home visits on a Thursday and I have no car to take her today. Any suggestions???. Do cats have strokes???. What caused this???. I have other cats who I have separated - they seemed very concerned.
thanks
Kirsty

It could be eplilepsy, but I would talk to your vet.

I don't know about strokes, but I had a dog who had seizures about 4-5 times a year. She exhibited behaviour similar to what you have described, and she got over it and seemed fine afterwards. As her seizures were not that frequent, the vet advised not doing anything about them, and she lived until she was 13, so not too bad. It would be worthwhile checking with your vet tomorrow about the possibility of seizures in your little one. As for her being small, my daughter's two rescue cats are small, they are fully grown but still a lot smaller than average, some cats are just small. Sending some catmagic3.gif for your little one, I hope it is nothing serious. Please let us know how you go with the vet tomorrow.

Sounds more like a seizure. Poor little thing. Get the vets opinion, but if it was a seizure, just keep an eye on things. Unless she has repeated seizures, medication shouldn't be necessary at this stage.

Thanks Everyone, I feel a little better about it now. I will keep my eye on her and ask the vet for his opinion. I wonder if it has happened before and we were not there to see it...???.
Somebody said she may be diabetic - is there any test for this???. How would I know???. I thought perhaps having such a slow start in life all of her organs may not have fully formed???. Her mother and other kittens were starving when we moved into their house - the prev owner (elderly lady in her defence) had moved out six months earlier. Between this and the grass seeds in the dogs foot I will surely put the vets children through University (I think I have already paid for their private schooling).

thanking you again fellow cat lovers, I will update this post next week when I am back in the office.

I too thought a seizure..but the vet is the way to go ..They can test for diabetes too if you are worried. I imagine blood tests may be in order.

animals can have a stroke just like humans, I think it sounds more like a seizure, but you need to have this cat seen be a vet ASAP, even as a long time nurse, I always see my vet and do not try to diagnose my own animals, please see your vet
