I know this is weird to explain but Oscar sometimes backs up to furniture or the wall with his tail straight and then it shakes really quickly and the walks away????

He is desexed and I check where he backs up to and nothing is there so I assume that he is phantom spraying?

I think you are descibing spraying behaviour - you need to wipe down the surface he does this to with as piece of paper towel to see if he has sprayed - it does run down hill - and I don't think he would be doing it for nothing! They often too look a little excited when they do it.

Just because they are desexed or female doesn't mean they won't do it. He is marking his territory - so has there been any changes of late? - this will require retraining I think

It sounds like spraying behaviour to me as well.....however some cats will do that tail dance just because they are feeling good....can indicate pleasure in some cats.

Does he do it after a smooch session?

If nothing is there, it is phantom spraying. Some cats do this and it is a marking type of behaviour, but without depositing the urine...will hopefully stay that way!

It is definitely spraying behaviour and you are lucky that he is not spraying his pee!! I call it "shaking the tail feathers"!

Good advice given. Definately sounds like a spraying behaviour.

Yes it is always when I get home from work and he is being given attention.

Can this change? Will he start to spray urine or do you think I will stay as a fake spray??? He has recently taken to doing ones and twos on my bed and I thought that it may be attention seeking behaviour. DO you think that this might be related?

A number of mine do this as well, normally round feed time they don't actually spray just do the tail shaking and hop from one back leg to the other.....

MOAM does it when he wants more biccies and the base of his tail fluffs up as well.. it's called the biscuit dance...

Jasper who has sprayed in the past for stress reasons will still dry spray but if he's really stressed (as he was recently) he will occasionally spray a few drops of urine. I've got to be careful to watch him and if he's getting too agitated, I'll intervene and try to distract him to another activity to stop him.

The Animal Behaviourist who visited Jasper and Akane said that many cats will dry spray without ever really spraying.

I have a female cat that does this and her mother did it before her and neither went beyond that to actual spraying, so fingers crossed it will stay as it is, just phantom spraying.

My Monty does this very occasionally, but he's definitely not spraying cause nothing comes out and nothing is damp and he only ever does it when he's being patted and stroked and his eyes are closed and he's blissed out. lol
