I have a kitten who was treated by my vet yesterday and today I will be going back as arranged. The kitten has got herpes virus, I think. No runny or blocked nose but his lungs are congested so he is breathing deeply. His colour is not so good either which means he isn't getting quite enough oxygen. He isn't eating off mum at all and losing weight. The kitten is 3wks and 4 days old now.

My question is - how on earth do I get fluid down him when he is breathing like this? He is a bit dehydrated. I have given other kittens fluid by syringe before but not one like this. I am scared that the fluid gets into his lungs.

Any suggestions please.

You need to see the vet ASAP this kitten is in big trouble. Go immediately as they can put fluid under the skin.
It also need antibiotics as it sounds like it has pneumonia which is a matter of urgency with a three week old baby.

I have just spoken to the vet who says to put just a few drops of fluid on his tongue regularly. I have brought the appointment forward to 2.30pm. My vet is aware of the sick kitten. Unfortunately there isn't much he can do to help the kitten. The kitten has to fight the virus himself. The virus is causing the congestion in the lungs. He had an antibiotic injection yesterday late afternoon and also injections of fluid. I know it doesn't sound good for the kitten. The other kittens in the litter are fine apart from slight sticky eyes. I am keeping the little fellow warm as his body temperature is a bit low.

Thanks Chris for your help.

I suggest administering saline injections yourself and start tube feeding. PM me if you need more details.

At three and half weeks LG you may find the kitten will eat sloppy milk and mince mixed up off your finger, she wont have to breath and suck as she would from a bottle or nipple. try it, i have done this before.

Thank you all for your help but sadly my kitten died yesterday afternoon. We had just come back from the vet who gave him more fluid and another antibiotic shot but it was all in vain. It just wasn't meant to be. sad.gif

Mother nature is wicked sometimes.

It seems a really bad year for losses. We lost three recently. Too heartwrenching.
