Hi,
I am new here and am hoping for some advice. I have two desexed Male Birmans that are completely indoor cats and are four years old. They recently escaped the confines of the house and were in the yard for about 5 mins and Blurr stumbled on a neighbourhood cats faeces that was in the garden. He was sniffing it intently when he was recaptured. He has since calling and meowing at all hours of the night and day at the back door (the escape route) and water squirting and verbal reprimands are completely ignored. I am not sure if the escape and subsequent smelling and the calling are related but it is driving us nuts and I don't want to smack him so am looking for any alternate solutions.

Thanks in advance confused1.gif

I have that problem with my cat too. We took him out on his harness and he just sits by the door crying now. Nothing works that i have tried.
Sorry

From what I've read and remembered from past topics that are similar, I think the owners just let them cry? Because there is no other way they could let their babies/baby out so.. I guess you might just have to let them know they're not going out anytime soon and just don't give in to them and just ignore?

i'm sorry.. I'm actually not too sure but I hope that helps. Maybe buy ear plugs and new toys to entice them?

Im going to say get some Rescue Remedy behind their ears and in their water and it should calm them down. It seems to work wonders and I have some in the mail myself. Other ways to try to calm them is the feliway spray but not sure what others have found with this.
Maybe if it gets too terrible you can get an outside run attached to the house and they can have a look from there but still be safe.

I think he needs to be locked up somewhere at night away from the escape route....it is very likely that the cat is still outside in the garden at night.

Rescue Remedy in water and behind ears, Feliway diffuser and plug it in where ever you lock him and his friend up at night. Give an extra big meal just before locking him up - or put food in with him.

You need to break the habit he is getting in too...

If he persists get/borrow a cat carrier - a large one and simply lock him in it for time out when you get up to attend to him. Don't make a fuss - just pick him up firmly and put him in the box.....and don't do what I do when I go out to use this technique on my noisy stud boy (which is hard to resist telling him he is a good boy and give him a cuddle 'cos he is so happy to see me) that is doomed NOT to work.

Good luck with him - someone might have a better idea.

Feliway diffuser did not work me unfortunately. we actually have the cat carrier open about two metres from the door and we put him in there when he was naughty and now when he goes by the door and starts to cry my boyfriend gets up and loudly walk across the room and he runs into the carrier himself! But he still cries when he's in there... maybe i'll try rescue remedy as well.. but I don't think he's stressed, just wants to go outside.

Maybe you can invest in an outside enclosure?

Thanks so much for all the suggestions - I have 2 feliway diffusers on order so that is one and i have rescue remedy spray so will try that as well. I also have a double size carrier that I can bring in if the other tactics don't work.

I agree that it is a habit he seems to be getting into that we need to put a stop to so THANKS EVERYONE for all the wonderful suggestions.

This is my first post ever and I am so impressed!

p.s. I am also investigating the possibility of an outdoor enclosure - a portable one in case we move...

Well done - you are on his case I think. Hopefully he will get the message soon if you are disapproving but also disinterested.....lol.

You can also cover the carrier with something so he gets it that it and you are not a soft touch.
