hi all, I'm very new to cat ownership and am going to call my vet on this tomorrow but wanted some of your thoughts too please.

My 9mo Burmese was vomiting somewhere between 10am and noon today. He also had diarrhea, there was a solid motion in his litter box but about a meter away from it was a very ruuny almost clear motion and his little rump area was quite yucky.

I took him to the vet who diagnosed gastro-enterisit, gave him an anti biotic shot and a shot for the nausea as well as oral anti biotics to take at home.

He passed another very runny almost clear motion whilst at the vets (right after the rectal thermometer followed by a very rude finger in the rectum exam).

She said his temp was 39.6 and that 38.5 was normal for a cat. (or 38 was normal...? Sorry i am fuzzy on that).

I've put him in our laundry where he can recover in peace from my kids and messes will be easier to clean up. I have fed him but he hasn't eaten it as yet. He's not a piggy cat anyway so no concerns there as yet.

My biggest worry is that we are collecting a 12 week old baby girl on Saturday afternoon (chocolate Burmese). I mentioned this to the vet and she didn't comment on this in relation to Beama's illness. I asked her if I'd need to sterilise the carrier and she said yes because the gastro wold make the kitten very ill.

Much as I've been counting down the days for MONTHS, I do not want to put this baby at any risk and the breeder is happy to keep her until we can collect her safely...has anyone had experience with cat gastro and any words of advice please?

Also, what's the best way to sterilise a collapsible carrier?? I only bought it today - shoulda got a standard one I could EASILY clean!

Thanks so much in advance....will eagerly await responses but am working day shift tomorrow so may not reply for a while...

The carrier can be sterilised in a 10%bleach solution or F10. I would postpone picking up the kitten for another week to be safe. Gastro is very serious in a young kitten and places a huge stress on their little bodies. I know you are so excited but it would be risky as it sounds like Beama has quiote a severe dose. He also wont feel like having a pesky kitten around when he feels so ill. Good luck.

Thank you Rocanrole - what is F10??

I reckon you are right about the kitten.........she is for my daughter's birthday which isn't until the 1st Dec anyway so maybe it's better timing anyway.

Poor Beama looks so miserable. I just washed him over with a wet facecloth.

Now...I was reading the nutrition forum and found some very negative posts about nutro dry foods. Guess what Beama ate yesterday and today?? I'm highly concerned about the link here. Would the fact that he has a temp rule out dietary causes? Why didn't the vet question his diet as a matter of course anyway....?

Just wondering out loud, but hoping for some feedback on that matter anyway. Many many thanks

F10 is a really effective disinfectant that kills just about anything but it is pricey and bleach does just as well. If the Vet gave Beama antibiotics then he must feel that he has a bacterial infection and the vomiting plus the diarohea sounds viral or bacterial. Food related tummy problems don't usually need antibiotics so I don't think that is a real issue. Perhaps some steamed chicken shredded up would be nice and easy on his tummy until he is feeling better? Gentle pats to Beama.

Thanks so much, I'll keep him away from Nutro in future just in case. He ate a little mince this morning and woke me up with his loud purring after Miss 8 let him out of the laundry. He's looking 100% better, I'm so glad he's comfortable now.
Must run get ready for work, appreciate you sharing your wisdom :-)

I think I would be changing his biscuits to a brand like Hills or Royal Canin. Good luck with your little man.

I think it's a wise idea to ask the breeder to hold the kitten for another week or so until Beama is definitely well.

Thanks all, our new kitten will be staying with the breeder for another week. She's my daughter's 12th birthday present which is on the 1st Dec so another week is actually better in that regard but it is killing me to wait!! My daughter has no idea so she's not worried by the wait :-)

Beama appears totally normal now which is good after seeing him so miserable yesterday. And OMG was he ANGRY in the carrier on the way home from the vets, i was seriously scared he'd claw his way out!

CatsRU, I did change him to RC yesterday, and he ate a bit of it today..... Hills...is that the science diet one? I noticed they sell it at the vets today and asked if they had it for kittens but they only had adults. They said they can order it in but I wanted to research it first.

I really appreciate everyone talking the time to advise on this, I felt like a silly "first time Mum" at the vets yesterday but turns out my worry was justified.
