I have been asked to post a question for a friend

She has had a cat for a long time now and went away for a month. For the 2 weeks since she has been back the cat has been urinating on the floor in a number of location.

She noticed that she used the tray and then a few minutes later urinated on the floor next to the litter tray.

Is this just a telling off period for going away and it will calm down, or is this an ongoing issue now that the smell will be through the house etc.

Any Advice, similar stories?

Leigh

I'd tell your friend to get the cat to the vet.

Usually if they are peeing out of the litter box, it can show signs of an UTI or something like that.

I'd take her to the vet too...

Could it also perhaps be that maybe the cat, while the owner was away, experienced some sort of threatening behaviour from other cats? And now she's come home, she's a bit stressed and is trying to mark her territory again?

First port of call should be the vet to rule out a health problem. If it's not a health problem, it's likely to be due to stress. Stress can also bring on a urinary tract problem as cats are very sensitive to stress and stress is one factor that can be involved in causing urinary tract problems.
