Ok it took me ages to get around to doing these but finally they were done and we have been using them for around a month with no problems at all
here is a photo of them being drilled, becareful not to press to hard or they may crack

there may have been a few extra holes when we were finished but not many more then in the photo
I actually find it easier to just shake both tray still together back and forth as it doesn't end up every where as it does if you lift the sieve tray out and shake it

hope this helps
Haylee

Thanks for the photo Haylee. I put my trays bottom side down on some soft wood and drilled that way - a bit more awkward but nothing split. I just need to cut off a few off the drilled out bits that are hanging on and mine is ready to go.

That looks pretty simple, thanks for posting the pics Haylee. And good idea Jemappelle about drilling on some soft wood.

I will definitely try this. :-)

yay, I just did this on the weekend and so far so good..... Will post pics later. Although, I just noticed that the holes I drilled are bigger than the ones in hayleys one, oh well - we'll see how it goes...

ok here's my attempt...

and here's the holes....

If I do another one, I'll definitely make the holes a bit smaller (not that it's been a problem yet)

the cats still prefer the std litter, but they have used this and I really like it smell/cleaning wise.

I still dont really understand how these trays minimise smells ?
I can see how the litter would last a bit longer as the urine drops to the bottom & the litter would only retain part of it but doesn't the small just waft up & through it ?I'm just thinking if its sitting there it has to smell.
Please explain ?

Lushbaby, the wooden pellets break down into a fine saw dust and go through the holes (that is why the trays need to be shaken a couple of times a day). The sawdust then expands and soaks up the urine.

Thanks for the idea. I am going to get some small trays and drill them. I find the proper oz pet trays too big for the kittens to climb in so sometimes they give up and do it in the bikky bowl instead.
I am going to Bunnings tomorrow you have inspired me.

What a great idea Haylee, I don't know if I missed the original thread on this topic and you may have already told us, but, what do you estimate the cost of the finished "home-made" unit to be ?

Very inventive clapping.gif

Mary it took me ages to find these tubs again but the reject shop has them and they are only $10 each so $20 plus some RSI lol
my one tip is to actually drill the actual corner part all the way around as the saw dust tends to go to the side (I do mean the whole outer edge if that makes sense)
these are huge recycle tubs and super strong you wont kill them unless you are a little rough with the drill

also to add you can make the holes quite big and then the sawdust get through easier
