Whereabouts should you keep the litter tray?

There is a bathroom downstairs and I thought maybe I could put it there because hardly anyone uses it; but the cat would have to go through the space where the washing machine is kept. I heard you shouldnt allow kittens to go near the room with the washing machine?

Im aware of the stink of the kitty-poo and thats why I want to keep the litter tray donwstairs where its abit cooler than upstairs.

But I read that when you get a new kitten you should keep it in the room where the kitty litter is kept for a while so it knows where it is - and Im not sure if I should confine a little kitten in a bathroom... :(

I want to keep the litter tray in a room without any carpet, and the only rooms that are tiled is the bottom floor rumpus room and the bathroom joined to that room.

So I guess thats the only place I have where I could keep the litter tray...

Sorry for rambling on and on but this is really worrying me..

So here are my questions:

1. Is it true that you should keep your kitten confined in the room for a while where the litter tray is kept?

2. Would the barely-used bathroom be an okay place to keep the litter tray and the kitten (for a while) ?

:shocking: Im kind of scared the kitten might get cold but I dont know where else I could put the litter tray. HELP!!!

It sounds like the decision has already been made! I wouldnt have any hesitation about trying the kitty litter box down stairs. Once the kitten is accustomed to the spot, it shouldnt have any problems using it if it is already kitty-litter trained.

The only difficaulties i can see arising is when the kitten needs to go, it may not make it on time and opt to try somewhere more convenient. Have you thought about having two kitty-litter trays ( i Know !! ) until your kiten is settled a bit and then only having the one down stairs??

I Have two litter boxes - one in the laundry and one in the second bathroom. The rooms are spaced apart so my furries have a choice. I have three cats, so one kitty litter tray just wont suit.

When i was toilet training my youngest cat, as i walked past the kitty litter, i would place ( i was going to say dump! ) the kitten in the tray and walk off. It soon got the idea.

Hope it all works out for you.

Regards,

Use the bathroom downstairs - if you think it is a bit cold get a small mat from the $2 shop to make a place on the tiles that is carpeted...and of course it will have a warm box to sleep in and maybe a scratching post.

I give all the people who collect their kitten personally a litter tray - the cheap kind from the $2 shop - as an extra to put in the room where the kitten is playing and visiting away from it's real litter tray - and suggest they do this until it is a little older and they are sure it knows where the tray is.

Thanks so much! :D

I was thinking if I couldnt keep the litter tray and the kitten in the downstairs bathroom then I would keep it in a spare room upstairs but it gets hot and its carpeted (I was worried about the smell). :cat: :D

I would agree with Lexi and Heather - in the bathroom downstairs and also have a second one.
