I have just read that from now on, any cats/kittens coming into New Zealand from Overseas, must have their bedding, and any toys in the travel cages destroyed! This is from MAF. Apparently previously you were given the option of paying to have the bedding treated, but no longer. It all must be destroyed!!

I guess this is where just using newspaper comes in handy and its so cheap, lol

Yes newspaper is fine but I have found the newspaper ink on fur not so fine.
I once had a kitten arrive in Melbourne airport covered in newspaper ink,he looked absolutely dreadful and getting it off was no easy feat.

I would rather proper bedding that can be destroyed if need be.

Yes I think proper bedding, but not something expensive would be the way to go! smile.gif

Old sheets and towels would be good for this I imagine.
Maybe you could stock up (from friends/family/op shops/freecycle etc) and rip them up into travel blankets as required.

Those fleece throws are quite cheap and the perfect size, they had them at bath and beyond for $5 (which reminds me I was going to buy a couple..)

How sad for the kitty though, to lose toys and blankie from home!

The second hand shops - baby blankies are the way to go...but they are being rather paranoid aren't they.

I guess the best thing is for the exporting party to mail over the toys so they are ready and waiting at their new home to greet them, along with a blanket with their smells on. To be honest, polar fleece from a material store, or those cheep throws from well known low-cost outlets are so cheap it makes no difference. Just another example of MAF going overboard though !
