I have just taken on a 3 yr old foster cat. A beautiful, beautiful cat she is. Sadly her paws are white yet stained an unfortunate yellow-brown colour. I searched various threads for hints and tips and came up with a few posts from previous threads. I woud like to post them here, in this one thread. If you have another idea, please add to this thread. Thank you. (I have a few questions to ask at the end, as well).

Keeping white fur white...

Hint and Tip #1 from Dimples

Hi to all keeping a white Persian white is a challenge. I started with a white Persian and discovered I knew not much about keeping them white!. With much assistance and learning from other people who show and breed whites iI found the following tips very helpful for keeping our white Exotics clean-

Eyes: clean 2x daily with following solution
250 mls cooled boiled water
3 table spoons - no tears baby shampoo
1 tablespoon of whitch hazel (avail from health food stores)

This helps keep eye staining and leg staining at bay.
Keep in fridge lasts 2 weeks-Use make up removal pad for eye cleaning (or cotton wool)

Ears every day.
My whites are washed every 2 weeks

Hoss Gloss white shampoo diluted 1 part hoss shampoo and 2 parts no tears baby shampoo.
Wash once then wash cat again with baby shampoo to avoid turning cat Mauve(yep I have done that one)

When blow dried I brush Johnsons "Corn Starch" baby powder through their coats and do this every 4 days. It helps lift out grease and dirt particles. Any baby powder should work. I find that this one is less inclined to make them sneeze. Ensure all powder well brushed through.
Hope this helps somewhat. I learned the hard way!!

Hint and Tip #2 from Cuddleton

Plum white shampoo

Hint and Tip #3 from Heather Sharada
The other thing worth trying is Vanish soap....harmless and very good on stains - also even a little bit of liquid Biozet might do it - as it is an organic stain - just don't let the cat lick it off.....I'm not sure whether it is dangerous or not.

Hint and Tip #1 from Helen
A very good friend and Persian breeder told me this one ... it works with my cats and I hope it works for you.

Buy some white chalk from the cheapie shop.
Put it in a plastic bag and use the rolling pin on it until its a powder.
Add water and mix until you have something that resembles toothpaste, use a toothbrush to apply to the area.
Allow it to dry and brush out.

It's cheap, easy, not poisonous and I found it works.

Hint and Tip #5 from Sandii

I suggest Aristopet Snow White Shampoo.
The Dry shampoo by Shaw's is excellent as is Four Paws Pro White Grooming powder.
Just remember if using the dry shampoo to wipe with a dampish cloth after combing/brushing it out.

Now my questions...
1. Has anyone used the Aloveen Shampoo?
2. Would a bi carb paste work, then washed off to avoid the cat licking it?

Thanks all CWers!

Becky
Looks like those suggestions are for show cats
Beau is almost white and a little grub- if there is a dirty muddy patch on my patio area he has to walk through it or plonk his fluffy white butt there- and then walk inside on my rugs if I dont grab him and wipe his paws first!
he still looks almost white despite that
I love the Aloveen shampoos- used to use the natural one- now the Oatmeal as Vinnie has sensitive skin- think they are fantastic
Seems to make Beau come up white again
Also Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo does a great job and nice smell
Beau's breeder advised a dishwashing detergent - think it was morning fresh but find it a bit gluggy on the coat and hard to wash off
Never used bicarb
For eyes I do the wipe with a pad moistened with warm water- or contact lens solution- though Beau's breeder recommended the witchhazel/baby shampoo water mix. Every so often antibiotic ointment to clear his eyes completley (which I discuss with my vet)

Are we going to see pics of this cat before and after???
Good luck

Oh this is a topic close to my heart as I have a bicolour stud boy who gets chin acne. He can also get very yellow from sleeping in his own pee!!! Chalk is good to cover up but washing with a blue or purple based shampoo works best. If you cant fully wash your cat try a blue dip. I use blue laundry liquid in a laundry tub full of warm water. I then put the cat in and keep him in for as long as he will let me. The blue liquid gives his coat a blue tone that counteracts the yellow. Too much turns them grey though. Because it is just a rinse it is quick. I dont like to wash and soften my boys coat so the dip works well to brighten his white underside while keeping his back dry (where the judges check the coat).

I use a Livamol whitening shampoo for horses, diluted, but I am only putting a little on the feet.
