I have a kitten about 7 months old tonk x burmese he use to use his kitty tray all the time, but now he is going to the toilet on our towels and clothes in the bathroom and also the clothes in the laundry. if there are no clothes /towels he will use his kitty litter, i know the simple solution is to keep everything up off the floor but with 2 young kids not always possible, and my g/f is getting anoyed with what he is doing and i cant blame her not saying im happy about it at all.

What i wanted to know is why he prefers to go to the toilet on our things insted of the kitty tray i mean if a towl fell down in the bathroom next to his tray he will use the towel instead, i have also caught him pulling the towel down from the rack.
The last thing i want to do is get rid of him as i know there is a solution to stop him from doing it.

I read that citrus is one thing they dont like so washing towels in that might work but what about clothing cause if i was clothes in citrus then he wont come near us will he?
He is a wonderful kitten follows me every where talks to me and screams the roof down when i go outside and always has to be with me.

My g/f wants to put him outside because of what he is doing but i know he wont last long as we have a busy street out front and a lot of idiots that drive around here.

Any help at all would be greatly apreciated as i need to solve this problem as fast as i can or at least show some improvement.

I dont know if this info will help out, he still has his crown jewels (but isnt spraying YET) our vet said to put his tray where he is going to the toilet lock him in there with nothing around that he can use except for his tray, i tried this and at least it got him to start using his tray but now uses what he feels like.

TIA

Sorry to hear about your problems with your cat.

First thing Monday, get that boy to the vets. Do you want to find out too late that he is spraying???? It will probably help too.

Then wash all towels, clothes and everything else, including floors in Bio-Zet, that has an enzyme in it that helps.
You can also get a black light that will light up where he has wee'd, probably in places you didn't expect. Be prepared to be shocked, I think it shows up kids wee as well. So, wash and wash.

As for the litter dish - how many do you have? Some cats like two, one for wees and one for poos. Have you switched litters? You could even try a couple of different types to see if that is the problem.

I would put Tonk in the toilet or other very small room, with toys, bed, food, litter and leave him to it. Go visit him and continue with cuddles etc. You could take him out for a cuddle, but do not put him down anywhere, take him back to his room. This is tough love and very necessary as you want to retrain him.

The whole fact that he is not desexed might not have helped matters at all, he might be thinking he is more marking his territory than weeing. I would never live with a non desexed male - unless he was a working stud cat. If you bring him back to the vets and spent the day washing while he was gone, he can go straight into his room and he'll still be groggy from the operation, so the timing is good.

This can take days or weeks, your plan is to retrain that cat. As sure as God made little green apples, if you do not do this, your gf's patience will wear very thin and he will find his little butt at a shelter or on the street where he is not likely to last 5 minutes. sad.gif
The chances of a cat with a toilet problem getting rehomed is zilch, so do work at this. smile.gif

All the best.

This is very common behaviour particuarly for entire boys. Easy to fix thankfully for you and this kitty, get him DESEXED immediately. It is only a matter of time before he does start spraying too. But do not let him outside, where you live it sounds like he would be dead within a week, which is too sad to think about. Cats generally live longer happy lives if they live totally indoors anyway.

I understand it is difficult with young kids in the house (as all parents do) but it is important to try and keep everything off the floor as much as possible as towels and clothing are too much of a temptation. Wash all your clothes and towels in Biozet Laundry Powder otherwise he will still be able to smell his urine on them and will keep doing it. Biozet mixed into a paste with some water can also be used to clean flooring.

He sounds like an adorable kitty though and we'd love to see some pics of him (minus his crown jewels). Let us know how you get on.

He is a stunning little boy and the others have given good advice. I would definitely give him two trays and maybe change the litter gradually. I like Breeders Choice but there is a thread on litters under Cat Articles which can be accessed from the Home Page. Also if you do a search you will probably find other threads which may help.
You can buy Biozet from supermarkets - it is a laundry detergent and is marvellous.

Thank goodness you will not let him outside as he will become a target from cars, other cats and/or dogs.

Good luck - desexing a male is not a very big op so he will be fine.

What a handsome boy he is. smile.gif

Do a search on cat litter and read, read and read. There are several opinions on different cat litters, some cats don't like the crystal clumping stuff because it hurts their paws. Anyway, have a read and you're bound to learn something. smile.gif

Do you live in Australia? Bio-Zet is simply a laundry powder for washing clothes in, just get it from the supermarket. I've been using it forever and it is very good, don't die when you see the price, the scoop is waaay smaller than the scoops in traditional landry powder. smile.gif

Hmmm I would try another litter tray and a different type of litter in that one. I think a lot of us use Breeder's choice or Ozpet that goes down well with cats. Get the second litter tray and use a different litter in that one. Keeping the old litter in the old litter tray.

I also second the desexing hopefully that would help a bit.

Aww something has changed for him to stop using his trays. It could be hormones so first step is desexing and get the vet to check for any other problems like an infection. While he's at the vet a total clean up ..washing everything in Biozet or an enzyme based cleaner ..lift all the items off the floor to give him the best chance of being good. Put two trays down and for the first few days keep him in say the bathroom or laundry so he is less likely to make a mistake. If he's being good then let him out for supervised periods. Hopefully he'll settle for you ..

He is gorgeous! Definitly desexing should help, at 7 months he is considered mature.
Urine off is a fantastic product and has a black light available. Some cats don't like the texture of the crystals and they make a hissing noise when peed upon. Try Breeders Choice or litter made of wood chips (Oz-Pets). Also make sure the location of the litter is well away from food, bedding and traffic (people). I've found that my cats like privacy but don't like the enclosed litter boxes so maybe have one of each? If you're going to the vet anyway, might be an idea to test his urine. The obvious reason is behavioural/hormonal but it is possible that he may have a urinary tract infection and he is letting you know something's not quite right.
Good luck...

I have a cat that likes the nice fresh straight after a shower water as well. I think it is just that it is very fresh? Or maybe soapy? Good luck, lots of good advice already. You could put the g/f out?

It is not uncommon for cats not to drink that much and to prefer fresh water. If he doesn't drink much just add a little water to his each meal (tinned, raw or biscuits) to encourage drinking. I would also recommend you buy a cat fountain. I use Cat-It and it works wonders. It has a bowl as well as dome on it so the cats can lick fresh running water off the dome. I'm guessing your cat would like this given his preference for fresh water.

My boy Ernie never use to drink either but since having the Cat-It I find he drinks a bit more, but usually straight off the dome - he likes to lick water off of hard surfaces rather than lap it out of a deep water bowl. I add water to his food too to be sure he is getting enough water.
