If you own an un-desexed cat and want to have him or her desexed before the cat breeding season commences again, consider contacting the animal shelters in your area as it is common for them to offer cheaper desexing rates during the Winter months.
Cats in general are seasonal breeders, reproducing during the Spring, Summer and Autumn. This means that the shelters encourage pet owners to have their cat desexed during the Winter months outside the normal breeding season to prevent unwanted litters being conceived the moment that warmer weather arrives.
These discounts can be quite significant.
For example, see the RSPCA Victoria website:
RSPCA Cheaper Desexing Rates
As you can see, a male cat can be desexed for $30 - this is less than half the regular RSPCA price. It is also less than a third of the price off getting the operation performed at a private vet clinic.

So, if you know of a friend, neighbour or colleague who has an un-desexed cat, please spread the word and help reduce the number of unwanted kittens being born every year.

Whoops! I misread the statement on the website. It says you will save $30 on male cat desexing and $70 for females.

Thanks for the correction Nicole!

I just had our girl at 6 months old done for $52.00 at the Glenroy vet.
I had to get a discount voucher from the local council (if you have pension or healthcare card)
Otherwise he charges $89.00 all the time for females under 12 months.

The Australian Animal Protection Society are also offering cheaper desexing between 1st August and the 31st of October. Here's a quote from their website:

QUOTE
HOW CHEAP IS THIS! As you all probably know, AAPS is passionate about the compulsory desexing of all cats. Throughout all shelters in Victoria, thousands & thousands of cats are euthanased simply because there are too many cats & not enough responsible people to adopt them. If you have an undesexed cat at home, please consider getting your cat desexed. AAPS are holding a cat desexing campaign from 1st August, 2008 to 31st October, 2008. The desexing cost for a male cat will be $40.00 & the desexing cost for a female cat will be $50.00. If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please make an appointment at our vet clinic by calling (03) 9701 5785.

These prices are as low as I have ever seen them.

Clove, it might be expensive but its a necessary procedure. There are so many unwanted cats and kittens around, all cats NEED to be desexed to prevent more coming into the system. sad.gif If you can't afford it, ask your vet about a payment plan. Or contact some vets and shelters in your area and compare prices.
