I have some friends there and am hoping that they stay safe too. Just spoken to her and she is just east of where the cyclone path is expected to hit. She can feel the winds really whipping up now and it is still 400 kms away from her. She said that it is slightly changing direction but this can happen several times.

I live in Mississippi....not far from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, about 300 miles and New Orleans about 318 miles.
When Katrina came through 3 years ago, we had quite a bit of wind from it, and I'm sure we are going to get wind from this one as well. Our weather forcast is already calling for wind and rain all this week. We don't get anything like they do on the Gulf Coast, but we usually get lots of bad weather from it....living as close as we do.
We also get a lot of evacuees from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. a lot of our churches are opening up for shelters, and all the motels around are already completely booked. The Mobile Vet. Unit from Mississippi State University was dispatched this morning I believe to help with all the displaced animals. I also helped an evacuee this afternoon at our local Wal-Mart find a " scooper " for her cat. She told me she had gotten everything out, but forgot her scooper!! At least she was laughing about it.
We are all holding our breathes that this time....it won't be nearly as bad as Katrina!!!
