There's a stray cat that I've been taking care of for about a year. He really doesn't like to be inside, and I don't want him to be cold in the winter. So I used some leftover wood and paint and old carpet to make him a winter house, complete with insulation.

Here are some pictures of the homemade cat house

Anyhoo, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to make a front wall that will insulate the house, and also let the cat go in and out of the house easily? Any ideas are appreciated! jumping06.gif

Well you could enclose the box and put in a cat flap.

Lucky furry and a very good looking one - he must have siamese in him.

Half close the front with wood and the second half maybe a lino flap?? So long as he does not run off. He is a nice looking boy.

You've done a wonderful job. Yes, I'd enclose the front as much as possible, and see if you can hang a hinged flap of carpet or something fairly heavy, but that he will push past. Also, there is usually one direction that gets far less prevailing wind, face the house that way.

Well done! Looks great. I would also enclose the front.

I would totally enclose the front by putting a panel from the edge of the extended roofing, seal off one end, but leave the other open. Maybe also enclose a little bit of the front of the existing box opposite to the sealed end, so that there is a side entrance into the box, with a very short corridor so that it keeps the wind out. Does that make any sense to you? I previously had an indoor/outdoor cat many years ago, and I put a cardboard box with the opening facing forwards into a slightly larger wooden box with the opening facing sideways, so she had a side entrance into the cardboard box, and the whole thing was put under a wooden barbeque trolley with a cover over it, so it was wind and rain proof.

Ah, I think that makes sense... sort of a box within a box, with their entrances not lined up.

The linoleum flap might be good, or carpet... as long as he knows he can push through it easily.

Thanks for all the ideas, this should be ready before it starts getting cold here.

Good luck, let us see the finished product, and it is wonderful that you are going to such trouble to give your cat a warm place for the coming winter.
