Outside Mulch Litter

Hi all

I am sure I read somewhere Cyprus Mulch and worms can be used as an outdoor litter area. We are in the process of extending our outdoor cat enclosure and I would love to use Mulch instead of litter - if the cats will take to it. I have done a search and come up with nothing, so I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction re the mulch and worms.
