Hi everyone,

we have a bad ant problem and we're waiting for the realestate/landlord to come and spray. I have the food bowls for our boys that have the moat around so that's not the real problem. I just went to feed my babies and the ants have gotten into the 3kg bag of Hills Science kitten food!! It has a ziplock bag style of closure which I'm sure was closed but they still got in. I have since transfered the biscuits to a sealed plastic container but I was hoping somebody might have a way of encouraging all the bloody ants back OUT of the food! It's too expensive to throw away! Will the cats still eat it too?

Hoping for a solution
Squaar

Just keep shaking and jiggling the container they will all eventually come out - try putting newspaper down and tipping them all out on the paper this way the ants have a better way of getting away. It is not a fast or fun job to do but this is what i have done in the past. Goodluck.

You could try freezing the bag to kill the ants then sieving the contents.

I've been told that ants wont go near mint plants. Maybe you could plant some mint in pots around your house. It's a more biological way of controlling the ant problem and it won't harm your cats.

I'd do the shake thing as well and then store them in a seal top plastic container........don't you just hate them for their persistance.

They are littel buggers when they get inside. But they do a great job of deakling with waste outside. I read a sciebnce paper once that said without ants the world would die, they perform vital functions.

If you have a big strainer or coalner you could take the lot outside, tip biscuits and ants in to strainer, and gently shake over the garden bed so they fall through. The snap on lid type container is best, I use a breakfast cereal one.

We had a problem with ants getting into the foster kitten enclosure. Every second day they would be in the food bowls. I bought some surface spray that lasts for 6 months and haven't had a problem since. I just sprayed a barrier all around the enclosure. smile.gif

I had a really bad ant problem last year on my kitchen benches so I got some mint plants and the ants disappeared and haven't been back clapping.gif
