The Australian web site has a very large gallery of images of the fires. Most are horrific, but there are remarkable tales of animal survival in there, too. Like Diva the cat (looks a little like a Maine Coon ... maybe ...) who had to be left behind when the family fled as the house went up ... but survived without a scratch in a wombat hole. And then there is the serious and responsible Braxton the alpaca who saved 'his' flock of sheep when their paddock caught fire and, when his owner who'd had to flee, returned and whistled, Braxton herded the sheep out of their hidey hole and brought them home.

Stories like these make me feel just a little bit better.

Thanks for the links.....I have emailed them to a friend in the US who is an animal lover. At least there is a little good news amid all the terrible suffering and destruction.
