After Poker escaping from the window I have gone on a hunt and found the link to a possible solution - even for those in rented accomodation......it can be fitted over screens to deter a cat that simply pushes the wire out....

It is a bit of an unwieldy site but there is also a description of collaring trees to prevent climbing as an escape route....

Joan I think it could be adapted quite easily for Australian windows as well....a little bit of thinking. It could require a small hole to allow screws but not unsightly and easy to repair invisibly when moving.

We need to look into something a little more robust now so this is a good link. Hershey has been standing at the top of the playgym and pulling the flyscreen out from the window. He thinks he's so clever! Unfortunately he's just made the house a bit hotter because I have to keep that window partially closed. He hasn't damaged it at all, but putting the mesh back in isn't going to keep him secure. If we could wedge some trellis or something similar in during the day it might just do the trick. For that window anyway!

Ive been looking into doing something like this to secure my Qld room for the cats, at present we only have flyscreen mesh in it and they are destroying that, you can buy the steel mesh at a lot of places but Im looking at getting some and having it powder coated black to match the house window frames and doors, we will still leave flyscreen in though but on the outside just to keep the bugs out, then will probably put cafe blinds on the outside, we cant have glass in it this time as it is far to hot where we are now to do that.

its a great idea and cheap compared to some of the other options Ive looked at.

You could make a frame round the outside of the plastic coated mesh too, and use clips like the ones they use on the outside of the flyscreens to secure them. Then you would just have a few small screw holes to fill, sand and paint over when moving.
