I'm going to research my family tree but not too sure how to go about it, I'm asking in the Brit section as I'm sure there are different ways to do this over in Oz, has anyone, Brit or Aussie or from anywhere looked into their family tree/ any help on how to get started would be good.

First get as much information as you can from parents and family members. It's interesting how the stories turn into real fact as you go. Parents marriage certificate then birth certificates. Death certificates in the past also give a small amount of information.
If you manage to get a certain way back, these sites can also help you out, but remember to double-check anything you find by obtaining the certificates or at least seeing them in parish registers (held on film by LDS) and perhaps getting a printout.
Try to keep a reference noted for each person you find so that you can prove your facts.
A couple of places really helpful online:
Free BMD. This has names, dates and places, but you need to apply for certificates to get any more info.
Family Search. This site is full of information, here you definitely need to double check as entries are not necessarily always correct. They do have very good tips on how to go about research too:
Can't find all the other links I used to use. There are great forums on rootsweb from before it was interfered with by ancestry.com More info can also be found on www.ancestry.com but they often use information that is free elsewhere on the web.
These should keep you busy to start with, but if you need any war sites(!) let me know and I'll add them too.
Good luck!

Steve, this is a link to the Rootsweb message boards. You could spend hours (and hours) searching through for names or places here, or add your own: Message Boards
or join the mailing list for counties or surnames or .... Mailing Lists
and there are so many more (when I think of them!). All my research is England/Ireland/Scotland. Then you get some American (like my OH) who goes online and finds someone's already done the research back to 1200 for his family. Not fair!

Steve, I used this site to start mine. http://www.ancestry.com.au/
It has UK records as well as Irish and Australian records. I knew a little bit of my grandparents and went from there.
Hope it helps. Have fun. Once you get started, its very addictive. Sounds like CW. LOL.
