My male Bengal started spraying on his bunny rug and in the carrier that he sleeps in.
It started after a local possum began terrorising us at night. So I'm constantly washing his bedding, which I want to keep providing with the colder nights.

I started to think the Bengal was spraying all over the house and thought the only outcome would be to restrict his area to the laundry. confused1.gif Thanks to cat-world I remembered reading about black light and how it identified cat wee. I did a bit of research and found it had to be a particular black light blue spectrum but the only ones I found on the web were low intensity and rather expensive.

So being a bloke, I went down to Bunnings and got a Heavy Duty Work-light and screwed in an Ultra Violet Compact Flouro party light that generates UVA, for a fraction of the cost. I did a test tonight (leave that to your imagination) and it worked a treat. So I plugged it into a 30 metre extension cord and did the whole inspection. The good news is that the whole house has the all clear, what a good boy my Bengal has been. I can now rest easy and my Bengal has the whole house to roam. thumbup.gif

Now did I imagine the smell of wee? Or that possum in the ceiling! Good thing that possum wee flouresces just as much as cat wee. Possum here I come. nono.gif

Ha ha, I have one screwed into an old lamp for just that purpose!! Try spray feliway to calm him. One spray of it where he sprays. It has reduced my studs spraying but a lot. It isnt cheap though.

Contrary to the stereotypes of Dads looking after their families...I even surprised myself. innocent.gif
I had to reproduce the act, in a suitable place, just to be sure myself. wacky.gif

It picked up hard to find food splatters in the kitchen also, mainly behind the stove. I tried to check the microwave for the same but every time I opened it's door the light went on. Didn't think to turn it off....durrrh.
I'll clean it tonight.

Are all black lights "fluorescent"?

Do they have to be Ultra Violet?

Do I have to get a Heavy Duty work-light, or can it be set in any lamp? Well, that's what Pamela did I think, she said she uses an old table lamp.

So I guess my question is whether all "black lights" are "Ultra Violet fluoro"?

It works best if it is Flouro but these days you don't need to get a tube, mine is a new type of screw in Long Life Energy Saver, Compact Flouro Ultra Violet Party Light (Made in China). They also come in bayonet fitting. Their are different wavelengths of UV. UVA works best. As does blacklight blue spectrum but not the standard incandescent bulbs.

I got mine at a hardware store but any good lighting shop should know what you need. UV and Blacklights are used widely in the cleaning industries and in hospitals to check on bacteria and uric acid etc.

Not all black lights are flourescent........You need to get one similar to what you know as a standard flouro tube or a new compact spiral one.

All blacklights generate parts of the uv spectrum but not all work as good as lights generating UVA in the blacklight blue spectrum. I am not an expert in this, I just know what works from a little bit of research and practicle use. Some companies make out that they have the ultimate sollution and nothing else will work as well.
That is not always the case though.
