We had a cat show yesterday and Fozzie, Kermit and Miss Piggy were entered as a litter. They are 12 weeks old tomorrow.
I was hoping to work out from the judges opinions, which of the two boys I run on from this litter as a Stud, all were healthy and happy and passed vetting no problems, and all had passed a vet-check previously with their health checks and vaccinations with no issues picked up...which is why I am still in a state of shock with the turn of events over the past 20hrs or so.
Just writing this has taken me most of the afternoon and evening...
After the show, we took everyone home and fed and settled them all...it was noted around 8pm last night, that the Blue Point boy, Fozzie Bear, was breathing a lot more rapidly that his brother and sister, which I thought was from the stress of the show...so we chose to leave him and allow him to rest as he didnt seem to be distressed, just breathing fast.
I knew as I was going to the dog vet already in the morning, I would take him to our vet if he wasnt improved...I had already decided I wasnt going to school
Later after the dog's appointment we noticed he was still not improved...so rang my normal cat vet...being Monday they were swamped and didnt know if they could take him on...as I felt this issue was too important to wait for a possible appointment, I decided to take him to another respected cat vet, if they could find the time to fit him in. Luckily they said come straight down and we headed down there.
The Vet said his heart sounded normal but fast...nothing obvious in its workings...took him in for a chest x-ray...showed some fluid in there, but couldnt be aspirated by the needle that was tried. Gums were pink as well.
The worst thing was that the main two issues the Vet felt could be the cause of his accute symptoms...the dreaded FIP disease or heart disease...both suspected to be the genetic kind.
He treated Fozzie Bear with steriods, diaretics and antibiotcs. If he drastically improved, the steriods would be acting on 'fixing' the FIP temperarily and we would know what we were likely to be dealing with...if he continue or got worse, it was likely to be the heart issue.
We left...but didnt get very far...he collapsed, distressed in his carrier after leaving the vet surgery...we turned around and race back, the car not even stopping before my husband was out of the car and running towards the vets before I had completely stopped.
Sadly, his heart had stopped already, but he was in obvious distress, so the vet completed his bridge crossing...
As the vet and I had discussed options and 'what if's' at the first visit before he crashed, I knew I wanted an immeadiate autopsy, which he graciously did, and even allowed me and hubby to stay for (I have had some vet nursing experience and agree that this isnt for most owners and even Breeders) and we saw everything as well as getting the official report.
The upside was that it ISNT FIP!! No sign of any abnormal fluid etc in the abdomin
The downside is the heart was obviously abnormal on the right hand side and is a rare dilated cardiomyopathy, an he said it is consistent with a genetic abnormality.
RIP Fozzie Bear...you had your first, and last show yesterday...
Here is a pic taken of him with one of the Judges from yesterday, Tracy Appleby..
