There is no law to protect cats. Everyone should be aware. I am going to keep searching for my little man, and try to get the law changed to effect protection for cats. I can understand that a property owner should be able to trap a 'nuisance' cat if all efforts have been made to contact the owner first (in my case, even though Balloo is incedibly friendly and had a collar with my details on it, no attempt was made, and I was not aware he had been on their property at all..), BUT the property owner/cat trapper should be legally obliged to then contact the owner, if possible, and if not, to take the cat to the cat haven or a vet.

As it stands....it seems that people are justified (and legally able) to trap and dump cats, provided there is no proof.

Horrifyingly, people are also legally able to trap and kill cats, provided they do so in a 'humane' manner. This is governed by the Animal Welfare Act 2002.

The Shire of Swan allows and encourages trapping of cats. My own shire (Bassendean) hires out cat traps for free...only a deposit is required. But, once a cat is trapped, there is nothing substantial in place to protect that cat. It is terrible, and until now I had no idea. Cat-haters are basically allowed and encouraged to act as vigilante exterminators.

I think the law needs to change....and I want my little man home safely....I still can't believe someone could just dump a poor little cat in a carpark on a busy road. He hardly has a chance...All I can do now is hope and search.

Thank you again for your support, and please look after your cats carefully!

I am sorry that this has happened to your cat.
My local council hires out cat traps but requires that all trapped cats are turned over to the council to be scanned for microchips and if unidentified they will be taken into the pound/shelter as strays. I suspect that the local laws will vary depending upon the state and local council.

My cats live indoors to protect them from all kinds of outdoor dangers including cat haters and cars. I take them outside on harnesses and leads for walks. If I wasn't renting and had the money, I would create a cat enclosure to allow more outside freedom without the risk of injury/going missing etc.

Yes, well....I will keep him indoors too with an enclosure etc if I get the chance to have him back.
I just can't believe people are allowed to trap and kill cats.
Anyway, hoping I get the chance again to look after and protect my cat.
I didn't want him to be an outdoors cat, but he was so desperate to explore always....I ended up relenting. I will not make that mistake ever again.

There IS only ONE solution!

DONT allow your cat to roam at will!
a lot of councils now have a cat curfew, and even a cat ban outside of their owners land.

I know you are dealing with the emotions of your situation, but please ask yourself...What makes a cat any different from a dog??
Dogs are not allowed to roam, and cats should also be kept inside or in a cat-proof enclosure or cat-proof backyard.
There are too many variables and issues that are not able to be controlled with a free-roaming cat.

Its not safe for ANY animal to be free-roaming

I'm closing this topic as it is virtually identical to your other one - just keep it in one topic please to avoid confusion.
