I Lost My Best Friend.

I am totally devastated. At 3.15am on Saturday night I was woken by my dog getting off the bed. He slept next to me every night for the past five years since splitting from my ex. He had given a bit of a cough and then I could hear water. Turning the light on he was going to the toilet but had tried to get it in the litter tray. This was not normal. If he wanted to go he would give a bit of a noise to wake me. Any way he was panting like he was hot. Then he stood at the door like he still wanted to go to the toilet so I took him outside and waited for him. A good 10 minutes went past and he hadn't come back to the door. I went out and quietly called and whistled. He came back slowly. We went back inside and I checked the water bowl and it was empty so filled it. Showed him and he had a drink. Then he laid down on the bathroom floor and was panting slowly. I got really worried because I lost an old English sheep dog to bloat about 20 years ago.
I ran out and woke my daughter. We bundled him into the car and headed for the vets. (Mind you in our pyjamas but I could not have cared less. Even stopped for petrol because I had none) Got to the vets explained what had happened. They took him through and had a look. They were wonderful. They took us through to him. He was on a drip and oxygen. They had taken x-rays and an ultrasound. He had a malignant lump growing on his spleen. In this instance the sack had broken and he was bleeding into his abdomen. They said they could operate but could only guarantee his life extended for 3-6 months and he would need to be on drips and drains.
Through lots of tears we made the decision to take the pain away. They gave us as much time as we wanted to say goodbye. Oh god it was so hard. He has been such a big part of our lives and had the most beautiful nature. All the cats loved him and used to cuddle up to him. They would even wash his face and he would return the favour although not knowing his strength would kiss them across the room. We miss him so much and it is so hard. This is a photo of him.

Stirling Council have a Pet Funeral Service and we will go on Wednesday to choose a wooden box and inscription on the plaque. He has left such a big hole in our lives. He was always such a character and he had the staffy talk. We used to laugh so much with him.

so sorry for your loss. Such a handsome boy-you did the most loving thing that is also the hardest thing to do. He was lucky to be part of your family as I can tell he was very loved-and you were lucky to have the time you had with him. Hugs to you as you adjust. Take one day at a time.
