Hi All,

This is my first time here and I am thrilled to be amongst cat lovers like myself. I have a question and I was hoping you could possibly enlighten me. I have one kitty named Chloe bear, she is going to turn 3 in October. She is very good with my fiance and I but when we have company over it is a completly different story. When guest come over she is good for a bit but if they stay longer she begins to hiss and them and swat. My dad came for a visit and was laying on the couch and she was actually attacking him, trying to scratch him in the face. (she has claws) Ok, so she may be a bit spoiled but I can't understand how she got so nasty.

My dilemma is, I really would like to get a 2nd cat. I live in a condo that is about 1500 square. I am so afraid that if we get a new cat or kitten that she will hurt them. I couldn't bare to get a new kitty and then have to re home bc Chloe is so vicious. I guess my question is, is there any behavior changes I should make and also do you think if I got a new kitty that she would eventually adjust?

Please let me know what you think, my heart is breaking bc there are so many kitties that need a good home and I have so much love to give. I just don't want Chloe to be unhappy sharing her home.

Thank you,
Nicole

I'd address the behaviour before you get a new kitty. My plan would be time out ..EVERYTIME she starts to get nasty ..put her on the floor say NO! firmly and ignore her ..if she continues ..put her in her room for 5 minutes.
Hopefully she'll work out that being mean stops all the fun ..but you must do it EVERYTIME!!!

Fleabag is right.

Is there any outside disturbances which might upset her?

Well there is a "outside" cat, I have been feeding her for the last 3 years. Chloe does see here through the glass door and she does pounce at the door trying to get to her. I didn't really think about that.

Nice to have you sharing on C-W. Have you tried Feliway spray to calm her......it has done wonders for this kind of unexplained agression.......with other distressed cats.

Feliway may well help her - you can get a plug in diffuser rather than a spray.....and definitely don't feed the stray cat where she can see it - she is obviously not happy about that.......and as Bronnie (Fleabag) said make sure that you deal with her behaviour.....time out is good.

I would not be getting another cat until she settles. spoiling is good up to a point but when the cat gets the upper paw - not good.

Hi, A product made by Feliway, Felifriend, is a spray that goes on your hands. Get any visitors to spray some on their hands before stroking her. Maybe also get a rod type toy so visitors can play with her keeping a safe distance. animal47.gif
