As everyone knows kittens are inquisitive, we have always as a precaution made sure the toilet lid is always down. I have heard terrible stories growing up so ever since we have had kittens and cats (especially older with difficult mobility) made sure that my OH and friends always close the lid!!

We do the same here too,
Especially since our raggies have an interesting passion for water, basins, toilets, the bath wub.gif
As most of you ladies would agree it takes a lot for it to become habit for a male to close the toilet lid everytime blink.gif ,
We just need to have furries in our lives to consider and it soon becomes habit yes.gif

Cheers,paul

Yep I do the same here. Never had kids but apply all the same rules. No cords dangling, no pot taken off the stove top element. Nothing they can jump up onto that may topple over. No vertical cords.

Dont ever want my heart broken if it can be prevented.

A very sensible precaution, and one I advise all my kitten buyers about in the kitten proofing section of my Care Sheet!

We keep the lid down just to stop them drinking. We have to go one step further though and keep the toilet door shut or we have to use recycled, shredded toilet paper.

We started putting the lid down years ago when we saw something on TV about when you flush and all the tiny little particles go into the air. Don't care whether it's true or not - NOT TAKING ANY CHANCES of having toilet water on my toothbrush!! blink.gif

So we were well prepared by the time we got our first kitten, my problem is when someone visits or stays and doesn't close the lid - grr!

it's a rule here too. I had to train not only the husband but the sister and 3 year old child! Was some feat... but it only took a couple cat dunkings - them jumping up and getting their back half drenched and the trail of soggy smelly destruction which ensued to convince everyone the lid down is for the best. I don't think my daughter was overly happy about having to assist me in thoroughly washing the kitties after the first time so didn't do it again. My husband feared for his life after seeing the look on my face as I was washing said cat - that was easy. My sister however... was another story. I have threatened that if she leaves the lid up again I shall take whomever dunks their rear end in the dunny and allow them to rampage in her room.

yes we do it here also and I advice all my pet buyers to do it. I have had one ring me and tell me the kitten fell in the toilet and he put it over his shoulder and jumped in the shower with her.
You would be surprised the people I have had here but that have cats and don't put it down. I also keep the door shut to keep the toilet paper from going everywhere.

I have always kept toilet lid down.....not sure that bigger kittens would drown but there are lots of hygeine reasons.....in my opinion....plus in Feng shui - open toilet is for money to disappear into the cosmos.....that alone is enough reason to keep it down.

I have a friend wh o pops in here after her meditation class - often before I come home and I don't always know she is coming but I know she has been because she leaves the lid up and shuts the bathroom door. My bathroom door is always open - not going to let anyone read about shredding toilet tissue - I like to get dirty hands to the hand basin without having to undo the door when I have been doing dirty things outside.

we shut the door because mine will shred the loo paper, steal the toliet brush and try to get in the loo, except when I am in there because I have 2 who cry at the door to come in and like to sit on my lap.................

Great advice, I made a laminated warning sign to close the lid after use and stuck it on the toilet cistern when my Siamese were kittens.

My favourite ebay seller has a sign especially for the cause:

She has also got a sign for show cages:

This is a rule in our house too, but I need to remind the kids constantly. The other day I walked past the loo, to see Gizmo's tail sticking out, he had most of his body in there. Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww sicky.gif My boy has a serious water fetish. Whats worse, my first cat Whiskey used to drink the toilet water. sicky.gif

... you mean something like this? LOL!!

Within the first two weeks of Dolly coming home, she fell in the loo, the bath, and the kitchen sink (when I had dishes in there soaking)!!

Secretly, I think she just liked mum getting out the shampoo and hairdryer - she's definitely a Day Spa girl!
