As the name would suggest, hypo (below/lower/deficient) + glyc (glucose) + emia (relating to blood) is an abnormally low level of glucose in the blood. What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?
How is it treated? If your cat is still conscious & can swallow, give it a sugar solution such as corn syrup, maple syrup or honey. If it is not able to swallow, rub this solution onto the mucous membranes of the cat's cheeks. Never force fluids or food into the mouth & be very careful to avoid getting bitten. It is important to follow up with your veterinarian, even if your cat appears to be fine. If diabetic, his insulin levels may need to be re-adjusted. If not diabetic, further tests will need to be performed to determine & treat the cause.
